First, it uses your existing deadbolt hardware instead of replacing the entire kit. To some, that's a benefit, but others might want to start fresh with new hardware. Second, August's app is nearly identical to Yale's, as the same Swedish conglomerate owns both companies. As mentioned, I'm not in love with Yale's app experience overall, so expect my qualms to carry over to August's software.
Google Assistant can’t unlock a Nest x Yale lock, so the phrasing that the door “was unlocked” could lead to a misunderstanding, despite it technically making sense. Some users have reported – and we’ve observed similar behavior – that locking a Nest x Yale lock with a Google Home routine has changed in recent weeks. Specifically, the routine now announces that a door “was unlocked” if it was already unlocked at the time the command was sent to lock the door. Another minor change that’s now being observed is a tweak to how the Google Home app, including routines and Google Assistant commands, handles the Nest x Yale lock. The current version of the Nest x Yale smart lock works very well with all the Google Home hubs in voice assistance, so you do not need to worry about them. These include Google Home Hub, Google Home, and Google Home Mini.

You may also need a chisel to reposition the cutout for the latch plate. If your lock hole’s center isn’t either 2 ⅜ or 2 ¾ inches from the edge of the door, you’ll need to re-drill them in the correct place. Install the Nest × Yale strike plate that comes with your lock. While your current strike plate may look the same, the Yale plate is engineered to precisely fit your new lock.

Backset refers to the distance between the edge of your door and the center of the hole for your deadbolt. If your deadbolt is more than 2-3/4 in away from the edge of your door, it’s not compatible. You can check theinstall guidefor more information. I hope that Yale will eventually spend a bit more time improving the experience for Android users. The app is functional enough, but could really benefit from a visual overhaul, and the lack of a Wear OS app remains frustrating.

Then you can enter your passcode and unlock the door. Once you’re inside, you can replace the lock’s batteries. If, like mine, your door has an existing deadbolt ready to go, installing the Assure Lock 2 follows the usual steps for any lock.

The lock should ask you to close the door so it can calibrate itself. If the lock detects an issue , it should automatically unlock. Close the door during the lock test as instructed.

The app will use this location when it sends you notifications, so pick one that makes sense. Once the app knows what device you’re trying to install, it should guide you through all the steps. The lock should tell you how to create a temporary passcode for your lock before you connect it to the Nest app. If you feel resistance, or the deadbolt doesn’t extend fully, remove the lock and re-check the deadbolt and lock installation. Do not install the batteries before you are told to by the installation instructions.

Use the two small black bolts to screw your lock into the mounting plate. You can find the holes for the bolts in the battery compartment of your lock. Before you fully tighten them, make sure the keypad and plate are square to the door. Insert the included key into the hole at the top of the lock and press down. Make sure the hole in the plate lines up with the lock’s deadbolt before you install it.

As someone who spends all their time at home, I prefer to leave it disabled. Setup was easy, and the door did unlock coming home from the grocery store as expected, but frankly, I'd prefer a Wear OS app over relying on auto-unlock. Auto-lock uses DoorSense to detect when the door is shut for a specific period of time before latching itself. DoorSense is an optional accessory that detects the status of your door, even alerting you when it's open or shut within the app. Generally, I like DoorSense, and auto-lock works reliably. Just keep in mind that opening your door all the way means Yale's sensors will realign.
